Bertil Nilsson’s Masc and Rich Felgate’s We, The Hated are among the 15 titles longlisted for the Raindance Maverick award at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifas).
The award is open to fiction features made for under £1.5m and documentaries made for under £500,000.

More than half of the titles on this year’s list are debut features. Among those is Masc, which launched in Toronto and went on to play BFI London Film Festival. It follows a young neurodivergent man who tries on different roles in life in an attempt to fit in.
Felgate’s documentary We, The Hated follows UK climate protest movement Just Stop Oil, examining the costs of taking a stand in a democratic society.
Other documentaries selected include Felipe Bustos Sierra’s Everybody To Kenmure Street, about the anti-immigration raid protests in Glasgow in 2021, and Rachel Taparjan’s Something Familiar, in which the director questions her origins on a trip to her Romanian homeland.
The Maverick selection is the final Bifa longlist to be announced, after lists for cinema of the year, breakthrough performance, new talent filmmaker, and international and documentary categories last week.
The five nominations will be announced on Tuesday, November 3, with the winners revealed at the Bifa ceremony at London’s Camden Roundhouse on Sunday, December 6.
Last year’s Maverick award went to Myrid Carten’s documentary A Want In Her.
