‘Sentimental Value’

Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value has won the prestigious Nordic Council Film Prize for 2026, with DKK 300,000 ($45,000) award.

The money is shared equally between writer-director Trier, writer Eskil Vogt, and producers Maria Ekerhovd and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar.

“Together with his long-standing collaborators, Trier has created his most mature work to date with Sentimental Value, developing a cinematic language which allows a story to be told that feels both personal and universal,” said the jury statement.

The Film Prize is one of five arts awards announced today by the Nordic Council, and voted for by juries composed of industry representatives from across the Nordic countries.

For the first time, Norway won all five awards, taking the music, literature, children and young people’s literature, and environment prizes too.

The award will be presented at a ceremony hosted by the Nordic Council on October 27.

Trier’s Sentimental Value debuted at Cannes 2025 where it won the Grand Prix. It was nominated for eight Baftas this year, winning best film not in the English language; and eight Oscars, winning best international feature film. It is the highest-grossing Norwegian film of all time internationally with $18.6m, plus $5.3m in North America for a worldwide total of $23.9m.
